Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been omitted from Manchester City’s squad for their pre-season tour of America.
Although the striker is quality on his day he has been out of favour at City in the last few months.
Surprised
The snub has surprised the striker. Adebayor told press: “ I don’t know what I have done wrong,”
“I get an email, out of the blue, on my holidays telling me I wasn’t going on the tour and they told me I am not going to train with the first team. It’s an insult to me to tell me I am now only fit to train with the reserves.
“I will return to training, but I feel I’ve been let down and disrespected.”
Unsurprising
The decision may have came as a surprise to Adebayor but it won’t have surprised most fans and observers. Adebayor spent the second half of last season at Spanish giants Real Madrid after falling out of favour at Eastlands.
Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is believed to still rate the striker, although the Togo international was not his first choice attacking option. Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente was his first choice striking target.
Mourinho didn’t get his wish because the Real Madrid hierarchy were unwilling to give the Portuguese boss the funds to sign the giant Bilbao striker. Instead, Mourinho turned his attention to signing the Manchester City striker on-loan.
Limbo
Although the Real Madrid boss likes Adebayor he decided not to make his loan move permanent this summer. That means that the 27 year-old is now in limbo, not wanted at Manchester City and not wanted in the Spanish capital.
Attitude
Emmanuel Adebayor is often criticised for his lethargic attitude. He is at times lazy on the pitch and sometimes looks uninterested when things aren’t going his way. He has also got himself a reputation for being difficult to manage.
He also really hasn’t helped himself by coming out with comments in the media about wanting to move and his unhappiness at his various clubs. The striker would be better letting his football do the talking.
Talent
It’s a shame that the striker has developed himself such a bad reputation because on his day he has all the qualities of a truly world-class player. On his day he is one of the best strikers in the Premier League.
He just doesn’t have enough of those days. However Adebayor is still a player capable of producing at the top level of football. At 27 he is just coming into his prime and he will score goals in whichever league he plays in.
Next
It’s unclear where Emmanuel Adebayor’s future lies. I think Emmanuel Adebayor would be a good signing for most Premier League clubs. The Togo international might need to cut his wages to stay in the English top flight though.
If Adebayor does want to prove his critics wrong then he needs to start playing and scoring goals on a regular basis.
Unlikely
With Carlos Tevez’s future in doubt at Manchester City there could have been an opportunity for Adebayor to reignite his City career. However unfortunately for Adebayor it seems that while Roberto Mancini is in charge at City he is unlikely to get another chance in the Manchester City first team. Although he may only have himself to blame for the snub.
Where will Emmanuel Adebayor end up this summer?
