Indonesia are through to the Suzuki Cup final following a 1-0 win over the Philippines in their semi-final second leg on Sunday.
Christian Gonzales was the hero for the hosts, notching a spectacular goal in the 42nd minute at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Gonzales had also scored the only goal in Indonesia’s 1-0 win at the Philippines in Thursday’s opening semi-final leg.
Both sides pushed hard for goals in a highly entertaining clash on Sunday, with Philippines goalkeeper Neil Etheridge producing a number of terrific saves to hold off an Indonesian onslaught.
But Etheridge could do little to stop Gonzales, who latched onto a rebound from a free kick shortly before half-time.
The Uruguayan-born striker unleashed a devastating left-footed strike from 25 yards out that pierced a crowded box and tucked high inside the right post, just wide of Etheridge’s outstretched dive.
With Indonesia now two goals ahead on aggregate the hosts were happy to play it safe in the second half, protecting their advantage and thwarting the Philippines’ desperate attempts to equalise.
Indonesia will meet Malaysia in the final, with the first leg beginning in Kuala Lumpur next Sunday.
