Sweden are the big winners of Saturday’s action in Group 1 of the European World Cup qualifiers, beating Hungary 1-2 while Denmark held Portugal to a 1-1 result.

The crucial match between Hungary and Sweden, could have brought the home side a step closer to next year’s finals. However, it was Sweden to take a vital victory.

Olof Mellberg made it 0-1 after just eight minutes, but Szabolcs Huszti equalised in the 79th. The Swedish kept focus though, and it was Barcelona’s new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to net the winner near full time.

Group leaders Denmark limited damage with a 1-1 result against Portugal, who craved a win in order to keep a decent chance of qualifying.

It could have been even better for the Danes however, as Nicklas Bendtner’s 42nd-minute goal was almost enough for them to win this game. However, Liedson balanced the score with just six minutes to go.

Denmark remain in the lead with 17 points from 7 games. Hungary follow with 13, Sweden have 12 and Portugal are in fourth place with 10 points.
