Group 1 of the European World Cup qualifiers is arguably the most exciting of all, as four teams are still fighting for a top-two spot.
Denmark lead this group with 17 points from eight games, four points more than second-placed Hungary. Sweden have 12 points, Portugal have 10.
On Wednesday, Denmark face an away match in Albania, a game that should not cause the Scandinavians too much trouble. In April this year, the Danes beat Albania 3-0 in their home game.
A more vital clash in this group is the match between Hungary and Portugal, the first of two matches between these two teams. Hungary have three points more than the Portuguese, who in return may be able to use their experience and overturn the deficit. It is certain that Portugal need a win, while Hungary actually need a victory as well in order to defend their second place.
This second place is mostly threatened by Sweden, who are extremely likely to earn three points from their away match against Malta. Based on upcoming fixtures in this group, the Swedish appear to have the easiest task. Especially the two clashes between Hungary and Portugal are in Sweden’s advantage, as their main rivals could both easily lose valuable points.
