(GSM) – After Young Boys’ success on Tuesday, another Swiss side is a big step closer to the Champions League group phase as Basel beat Sheriff of Moldova 1-0.

Basel reached the Champions League play-offs by beating Debrecen in the previous round while Sheriff stunned Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb beating them on penalties.

Over 13.000 fans had gathered at Basel’s St. Jakob-Park, where one of the four Swiss players in the starting line-up, Valentin Stocker, scored what turned out to be the only goal in the 54th minute.

Russian Alexandr Erokhin of Sheriff was sent off in the final minutes, picking up a second yellow card that will rule him out for the return leg.

The two sides will meet again in Moldova on Tuesday, August 24.
