Real Madrid captain Raul said he was proud to have equalled Alfredo di Stefano’s all-time club scoring record of 307 goals, but insisted team titles were more significant that his personal achievements.

Raul, 31, scored his historic goal in the win over Numancia on Saturday to move level with the great di Stefano, who won eight league titles with Real and inspired them to five successive European Cups, as Real’s top-scorer of all time.

“Personally I am very pleased to have been able to draw level with Don Alfredo,” Raul told the club website.

“However, the important thing always has to be the team because this win is very positive for us.”

Raul made his debut as a 17-year-old back in October 1994 and thanked all his team-mates past and present for helping him score so many goals in the famous white shirt.

“It is something that is very nice to have done. It’s a lot of goals and I hope to be able to beat him (di Stefano) in the next few weeks,” Raul said.

“This comes from playing so many years in Real Madrid, I have had so many coaches and good team-mates. They have always made my job a lot easier.”

Real moved nine points behind leaders Barcelona with their 2-0 win at Numancia and the club captain is focused on the battle to try and lift a third successive league crown.

“All that matters is that we’re nine points off the lead and must wait to see what happens with Barcelona (on Sunday),” explained the former Spain international.

Barcelona play Racing Santander aiming to stretch their nine-point over Real at the summit.
