Under-fire Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants to strengthen his midfield section in January and to that end, according to Sport, he’s put the name of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong on the table.
Ten Hag’s job at United is under serious threat. He survived at the end of last season mostly thanks to his team beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final, but the 20-time English champions now sit in 14th place in the Premier League table with meagre eight points from seven matches. It seems the 54-year-old is unwilling to wait for next summer to boost his ranks and try to improve United’s form and results.
United paid around £200 million to sign Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee ahead of this season, and the signings are yet to make proper impact on the pitch.
Meanwhile, De Jong, 27, made his first La Liga appearance in Barcelona’s 3-0 triumph over Alaves before the international break this month, having recovered from an ankle injury.
