The father of Chelsea and former England captain John Terry has been charged with dealing cocaine, police and media said on Saturday.
Ted Terry, 55, will appear in court next month, the latest turbulent development in his son’s personal life in recent weeks.
Essex Police would not directly confirm that Ted Terry had been charged, in line with policy, but issued a statement when asked about the case.
“A 55-year-old man from Chafford Hundred has been charged with supply of cocaine, a class A drug, and has been bailed to appear at Basildon magistrates on May 13,” a spokeswoman said.
John Terry was accused of having an extra-marital affair with Vanessa Perroncel, the former partner of England team-mate and close friend Wayne Bridge, earlier this year, prompting a media storm.
He was later stripped of the England captaincy by head coach Fabio Capello but the central defender is still expected to be a member of England’s squad for the World Cup in South Africa which starts in June.
