I have to say I don’t like deriding peoples efforts, especially when they seem like such a genuine person but Wolves boss Terry Connor is out of his depth as a Premier League boss.
The former-Wolves assistant manager has yet to manage his side to victory and they have dropped to bottom of the Premier League, courtesy of yesterday’s 5-0 home hammering by Manchester United.
Regrets
I’m sure a lot of Wolves fans are regretting calling for Mick McCarthy’s head now.
The team was on a bad run under the former-Ireland boss but I could never see dropping to the bottom of the table. McCarthy did a decent job at Wolves and I wonder if the board wasn’t going to appoint an experienced boss why sack McCarthy.
Desperate
The appointment of Terry Connor really did smack of desperation. No disrespect to the coach but he has no experience of managing a team and all of a sudden he’s in charge of a Premier League team.
If reports are to be believed Wolves discussed the post with a few experienced bosses including Steve Bruce. However the Wolves hierarchy claim to have only offered it to just two people, Connor and an unnamed boss. The unnamed boss decided not to take the position and Connor was the last man standing.
I’m also assuming that Terry Connor was the cheap option. I can’t see him demanding big sums of money to take the job. If Wolves were going to appoint a new man why not take a chance on one of the up-and-coming bosses in the lower leagues, at least then the boss would have had some experience of managing a team.
Decent
I’d have to say that Wolves have a decent squad of players. At the moment though they are now playing to their potential. They needed a good man-manager to come in and motivate the players. Looking at the squad I don’t think they have one of the three worst in the league.
However I think Mick McCarthy probably got everything he could out of them. They need somebody who could have a similar effect on the players. Terry Connor was already in the Wolves setup when McCarthy was there, so I don’t know what the Wolves board thought would change with him at the helm.
Genuine
It’s a shame that it hasn’t worked out for Terry Connor as boss because he seems like such a genuinely nice guy. However he is just simply out of his depth in the Premier League. If he’s going to be a manager maybe he should have learned his trade in the lower leagues.
It must be hard to turn down the temptation of a Premier League job though and like most rookie bosses he has struggled to turn things around at the club. It was Terry Connor’s chance of glory and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out for him.
Relegation
If Wolves continue playing like they have been then they will be relegated and that’s a fact. Mick McCarthy managed to keep the club in the Premier League for two seasons, Unfortunately I don’t think Terry Connor has much chance of keeping the struggling Midlanders in the top flight this season.
Board
I don’t blame Terry Connor for his failure, I blame the Wolves board. They knew that Terry Connor had no experience and was part of McCarthy’s setup, yet they still appointed him.
I don’t know what they were thinking but the decision will cost the club their place in the Premier League and the riches that come with it.
Were Wolves right to appoint Terry Connor?
