Chelsea interim manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed that captain John Terry will miss Saturday’s match with Wigan due to a rib injury.
Terry was substituted during Chelsea’s midweek victory over Benfica in the UEFA Champions League.
“We had to take him off because he sustained another knock on his rib and he couldn’t breathe so we’re just trying to manage the injury at the moment,” Di Matteo said.
“He won’t be available for tomorrow and we just have to see how quick he can recover.
“It’s one of those injuries that’s difficult to deal with because there’s not much you can do, you know, it’s in a position where it’s difficult to make it better.”
Di Matteo’s side reached the final four of Europe’s premier club competition with victory over Benfica, but the Italian believes the race for Champions League qualification in the Premier League will not be determined until the final weekend of the season.
“I think it will go right down to the last game of the season,” Di Matteo said.
“I think also Newcastle is in the running as they are having very good results and a very consistent season.
“So I think we have to count four teams that are racing for those Champions League spots.”
