Carlos Tevez claimed he was not ‘mentally’ right to play for Manchester City after refusing to come on as a substitute against Bayern Munich.
City lost 2-0 to the Bundesliga club in the Champions League on Tuesday, but the match will be overshadowed by the furore surrounding the controversial Argentine, who insisted he was not in the correct mental state to leave the bench when called upon.
“I just was not feeling very good mentally to enter the pitch so I put my opinion to Mancini,” he said through an interpreter, having been asked about what took place in the dugout.
Tevez insisted he will keep trying to do his best for the club – despite manager Roberto Mancini saying the striker is now ‘finished’ at the club – arguing he has been ‘professional’ throughout his time at the English Premier League club.
“That is his decision,” Tevez told Sky Sports after the match.
“I’ve been a professional throughout my time here.”
“Last season I was also the top goalscorer and I put my opinion through that I want to leave the club because of the family reasons, but I will keep trying to do my best while I am here.”
The fallout of the astounding incident is likely to be only just beginning after arguably the lowest chapter in Tevez’s career in English football.
Former European Cup winner and TV pundit Graeme Souness described the 27-year-old as a ‘disgrace to football’ in the aftermath of Mancini’s explanation on the incident.
