Tevez says City would flourish with Rooney: report

Carlos Tevez believes Manchester City would “win everything” if the club managed a successful, if audacious bid for wantaway Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Rooney’s decision to walk away from Manchester United, following several turbulent weeks on and off the field, after six years has sent shockwaves through the world of English football.

However his future remains undecided after a crisis meeting at United on Thursday failed to resolve what has become a burning issue.

Although Chelsea are reportedly in the running to sign Rooney, speculation is growing that the 24-year-old England international could sign for cross-town rivals City.

Such a move would cause huge controversy, however former City striker Tevez believes the benefits to City on the field would help sweep that aside.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan asked Tevez for his opinion on the matter and the Argentine said: “With Wayne we will win everything.”

Fans have been incensed by the news, and reports that the striker could be snapped up by City have only added to their sense of betrayal.

Officers were called out late Thursday after a mob of up to 30 supporters descended on the star’s 4.5-million-pound (seven-million-dollar) mansion in Prestbury, close to Manchester.

The balaclava-clad fans arrived at Rooney’s house — which he shares with his wife Coleen and son Kai — in a convoy of cars and repeatedly buzzed on his intercom, reported the Sun newspaper.

They warned the striker not to sign for Manchester City before police arrived and threatened to arrest them unless they dispersed, said the paper. Six security guards reportedly came to stand watch at the house after the incident.

Teammates Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra meanwhile hit out at Rooney’s decision to cite United’s “lack of ambition”, just two hours before Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Bursaspor, as his main reason for leaving.

Although it is believed some players have tried to talk Rooney round, French defender Evra insisted there is no place at United for players who do not trust their team-mates.

“If one player in the team doesn’t trust the others he should not play in the team. I’m not at that point because I trust everyone and I know we can win,” he said in the Daily Telegraph.

“I’ve been here for four years and every season, until last year, I have won the league. That hurt because this is Manchester United and we must win trophies.

“That is the pressure of playing here, so if a player is not happy with that pressure he should go. No team is better than us at the moment. Manchester United belong at the top and I?m confident we can do that.”

United captain Vidic, who signed a new long-term contract two months ago, believes the speculation about Rooney is unsettling the team.

“When rumours are going around talking about the bad performances or something happening around the club and the (club owners) Glazers, it is not good for the players and not good for the team.”
