Groningen striker David Texeira has distanced himself from comparisons with fellow Uruguayan Luis Suarez.
The Salto-born striker was reported to have caught the eye of English giants Liverpool after a strong showing in the Under-20 World Cup with Uruguay last year, but he has downplayed the possibility of an immediate switch to Merseyside.
“I’m David Texeira, not Luis Suarez,” he told NUSport.
“We have a different style of play and can’t be compared.”
“I’m a lot more like (Inter Milan’s Diego) Forlan. He is always running without the ball, and that’s what I try to do as well.”
“I always tried to imitate his style of play when I was a kid, and he’s still my idol,” the attacker admitted.
The 20-year-old, who hails from the same city as Suarez, was linked with a move to Anfield in January, but said that he is content plying his trade in the Eredivisie for now.
“I heard the rumours that Liverpool were after me, but people talk a lot,” he said.
“It’s way too early to join a club like Liverpool. I need more experience first, and that’s why I joined Groningen.”
“I want to develop here, and eventually join a bigger club, just like Luis.”
Texeira has nine goals in 15 appearances for Groningen since making the move to the Netherlands in August.
