Atletico Madrid on Tuesday named their former goalkeeper Abel Resino as their new coach, a day after the Spanish club fired Mexico’s Javier Aguirre following a string of poor results.
The 49-year-old Resino, who up until now was the coach of second division side Castellon, will coach Atletico until the end of the season, the club said in a statement.
Atletico slipped to seventh place in the 20-team Spanish league standings after their 2-1 home defeat by Real Valladolid on Sunday. The club has not won a match this year.
Aguirre is the seventh coach of a Spanish league team to lose his job since the start of the season, but he said he would be leaving with no hard feelings.
“After speaking face to face with people, the players, the press, I leave with a clear conscience,” he said Tuesday.
The former Mexico coach joined Atletico from Spanish side Osasuna in 2006. He led the club to the Champions League with a fourth-place finish in the Spanish league last season.
Atletico will face FC Porto on February 28 in the first leg of their Champions League tie.
