With Thomas Tuchel now set to officially be the permeant replacement for Gareth Southgate, England’s new boss will be looking to stamp down his authority early on.
With the Three Lions getting a new era underway under the guidance of the former Chelsea boss, a number of England’s international stars will be wondering about their future and how to impress the German tactician.
While the likes of Conor Gallagher might have enjoyed a new lease of life after completing a summer switch to Atletico Madrid, a number of English superstars find themselves at a real career crossroads.
With the January transfer window fast approaching on the horizon, we have taken a look at three of the England internationals who should be looking to get their careers kickstarted elsewhere.
Harry Maguire – Manchester United
With it appearing almost certain over the summer that Harry Maguire would finally be set for a move away from Old Trafford, many around the red half of Manchester were left surprised to see the England international stay put.
Watching Erik ten Hag’s struggling squad splash out a combined fee in the region of £100million for Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt and Lille youngster Leny Yoro, it appeared that Maguire’s time at Old Trafford was coming to an end.
However, pulling up with an injury against Aston Villa prior to October’s international break and also missing last summer’s European Championships, the former Leicester skipper should be looking to force a permanent move away from Manchester United.
Expected to be sidelined for at least a few weeks and clearly slipping down ten Hag’s defensive pecking order, reports on either side of October’s fortnight interval have suggested that United are willing to take a £70million hit in order to push Maguire out the Old Trafford exit.
Now 31 and desperate to to try and find regular first-team action, The Daily Star reported last week that United would be willing to sell their former skipper for a cut-price fee of just £10million in an attempt to push Maguire out the door.
Joe Gomez – Liverpool
While Liverpool might have only continued on an astonishing rise since Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield over the summer, one England international has struggled to find any kind of action under the former Feyenoord boss.
Although Slot might have been quick to praise the impact that Joe Gomez has made on the training pitch, the 27-year-old has failed to forge his way into a Liverpool defence that have only conceded a pair of Premier League strikes so far this season.
Shockingly earning a spot in Gareth Southgate’s EURO 24 squad over the summer and gaining a reputation for his versatility at the back, Gomez was looking to use his shock inclusion as a platform to build on.
However, only getting two minutes of Premier League action under his belt so far this season and clearly not part of Slot’s long-term plans at Anfield, there are suggestions that Gomez is keen on a switch away from the red half of Merseyside.
While the one-time Charlton schoolboy might have a contract that runs until the summer of 2027, both Aston Villa and Newcastle have registered an interest ahead of the January transfer window.
Ben Chilwell – Chelsea
While the mood in Chelsea’s camp might be at a red-hot high following Enzo Maresca’s arrival at Stamford Bridge over the summer, one of the Blues’ first-team superstars finds himself at the heart of a west London nightmare.
Completely frozen out of Chelsea’s first-team picture and forced to train with the U21s, Ben Chilwell was encouraged – in no uncertain terms – to find a new club before the summer transfer window slammed shut.
However, although the 27-year-old might have eventually stayed put in SW6, Chilwell clearly doesn’t have a future at Chelsea and Maresca has made it abundantly clear that he wants the Stamford Bridge hierarchy to find a solution when the transfer window opens up against in January.
Although Chilwell might have even been in possession of Chelsea’s captains armband last season, the 21-cap international is yet to be included in any of Maresca’s Premier League match-day squads.
Left out of Southgate’s EURO 24 squad and with his career now at a major impasse, The Sun reported earlier in the month that Italian giants Napoli are a keen admirer and could be looking to hand Chilwell a lifeline.
