With under a month until the summer transfer window slams shut, many are expecting what could be a frantic final few weeks.
While a host of Premier League clubs might be working within some tight financial resections, plenty of big-name stars remain linked with blockbuster moves ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Watching Manchester United really break the bank as they welcomed both Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee and Lena Yoro, some Premier League giants have been practically non-existent this summer.
As the clock ticks away until the summer transfer window slams shut on September 1st, we have taken a look at some of the Premier League heavyweights that really need to get a move on.
Liverpool
With fans around Anfield left heartbroken back in January as Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be ending his nine-year stay on Merseyside, Liverpool are certainly getting a new era underway this summer.
With it confirmed prior to the end of the 2023/24 campaign that now-former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot would be taking charge and replacing Klopp in the Anfield dugout, many were expecting what could be a hectic summer behind the scenes.
However, while Liverpool might have stormed their way to a much-needed Champions League return last season, the Reds have remarkably failed to make any permanent signings this summer and many Liverpool fans have been left hugely frustrated.
Although it might have been confirmed that the superstar duo of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will not be leaving the red half of Merseyside this summer, they are still waiting to welcome anyone through the doors at Anfield.
Now officially the only Premier League club that are to make a single signing during this summer’s transfer window, Slot hasn’t been able to add any reinforcements and time is really starting to tick away for the Premier League heavyweights.
With continued speculation over the future of academy graduate and England international Trent Alexander-Arnold as the 25-year-old enters the final 12 months of his deal, the pressure is really starting to mount on Liverpool.
Tottenham
While Tottenham might have eventually fallen short last season in the race to punch a lucrative Champions League return, Spurs did receive plenty of plaudits following a maiden campaign under Ange Postecoglou’s guidance.
Although the Lilywhites might have gained a real reputation for their free-flowing approach under the former Celtic boss, Postecoglou has made it clear that he does want Tottenham to go one-step further this time around in the battle to secure a top-four finish.
However, while Spurs might have agreed a deal to extend Timo Werner’s loan switch from RB Leipzig until the end of next season, many around north London have been left feeling hugely underwhelmed this summer.
Despite snapping up Leeds youngster Archie Gray last month for a reported fee of £30million, Tottenham have failed to make a real heavyweight statement and their wait for a new number nine only goes on by the day.
With the pressure on Daniel Levy’s shoulders once again starting to heat up, Spurs’ worrying lack of squad depth is becoming abundantly clear and they face what is a crucial month behind the scenes in north London.
While Postecoglou might have reportedly rejected any potential approach from the FA to replace Gareth Southgate, there have been some concerns that the Australian tactician could become frustrated with Spurs’ current lack of activity.
Newcastle
Left hugely frustrated back in May as Manchester United’s FA Cup success meant that they watched their European dreams go up in smoke, Newcastle are hoping to try and mount another genuine Champions League charge this season.
However, although the Magpies’ hugely controversial Saudi Arabian-backed takeover might have been confirmed in October 2021, Eddie Howe’s men have not spent any of their endless funds this summer.
While Newcastle and their Middle Eastern owners might officially be one of the richest clubs from across the globe, they are working within some incredibly tight financial restrictions and are looking over their shoulder at potential FFP sanctions.
Although former Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly might have arrived at St. James’ Park last month on a free transfer, Howe’s men have failed to make any real first-team additions.
While it might appear almost certain that both Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and attacking talisman Alexander Isak will be staying put in the north east this summer, many around St. James’ Park have been left feeling underwhelmed.
Dealing with a public injury crisis last season, Newcastle fans have been demanding a handful of new additions over the final month as the Magpies know the importance of avoiding another fitness nightmare this time around.
