European football is back on action. Or at least, sort of. The German Bundesliga will be the first top league – and second one, following the non-stop Belarusian Premier League – to return to action following the Coronavirus pandemic. They will do it this weekend, with an aim towards completing the competition before the end of June.
Things will kick off with several interesting matches that could shake up things at both ends of the standings. However, these are the three most intriguing games on the schedule this upcoming weekend.
RB Leipzig vs Freiburg – Saturday 15:30 GMT
RB Leipzig might be one of the biggest title candidates this season, but they have slumped a bit of late and now sit in third place of the standings with 50 points, five behind the league-leading Bayern Munich. Julien Nagelsmann’s men have gone undefeated in their last five Bundesliga matches (W2, D3) as well as their last five at home (W3, D2), so they should be considered as favourites. That said, Freiburg can’t be taken for granted. They are just one point away from sixth place and a win here could put them in Europa League position, as long as other results go their way as well.
Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke 04 – Saturday 15:30 GMT
Dortmund and Schalke are two of the top six sides in the Bundesliga this season. Dortmund are in second place with 51 points, and they currently sit four behind Bayern Munich at the top of the standings. Meanwhile, Schalke are in sixth place with 37 points and currently hold the last place for a European competition ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. Furthermore, the derby between these two sides – known as the Revierderby – is one of the biggest in the German football calendar. Undoubtedly, this is a game no football fan will want to miss this weekend.
Werder Bremen vs Leverkusen – Monday 20:30 GMT
Werder Bremen and Leverkusen will close the first week of action in the Bundesliga after the Coronavirus hiatus, and this game should also be considered as one of the top games in the schedule. Bremen carry immense history, but they would be relegated to the Bundesliga 2 if the season ended today. Leverkusen, on the other hand, sit in fifth place with 47 points and are just two points adrift a UEFA Champions League berth for the 2020-21 campaign. Both sides have something to prove here.
