According to Sky Sports, Manchester United and Tottenham are set to rival Leicester for the permanent signing of highly-rated Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans.
Tielemans spent the second half last season at Leicester, producing some eye-catching displays with his attacking abilities. The Foxes are understandably keen to tie the midfielder down on a permanent contract, but it seems they have heavyweight competition for the midfielder’s signature.
A highly promising midfielder
Tielemans broke into the Anderlecht first-team at 16 and is a familiar name to those who play the Football Manager series, as he became something of a household name amongst gamers.
In real life, Tielemans career took him to Monaco from Anderlecht in 2017 for a fee of around £21million. The signing seemed likely something of a master coup by the club from the principality, who are known for their shrewd transfer dealings.
However, the move to the Ligue One club did not really work out for the youngster. In the January transfer window, Leicester took the midfielder on loan and he has shown he can cut in the Premier League.
Not only is he talented, but at 22 years old he still has time to develop into an even better player in the future.
He would be a good signing for United or Spurs
Not to undermine Leicester’s interest in Tielemans. However, the Belgian international would be a good signing for both Manchester United and Spurs.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to make big changes to his Red Devils squad this summer. A centre of midfield may be an area United will look to improve, especially with Paul Pogba’s future at the club in doubt. Tielemans is just the sort creative player that could thrive at Old Trafford.
Then there is Tottenham. There is speculation over the future of Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen after he stated he would like a fresh challenge. It remains to be seen if the former Ajax star does move on this summer.
Even if Eriksen stays, then there seems to be a creative void in the central midfield for Tottenham. They often play with two defensive central midfielders, when they could sacrifice one of those for a more creative player.
Spurs have already been linked with the likes of Andre Gomes and Giovani Lo Celso of Real Betis. Tielemans may prove to be an alternative to either player.
Leicester will feel they have the best chance of signing the star on a permanent deal. However, the lure of European football at United or Spurs could sway the deal.
Would be a good summer bargain
From his showings towards the end of last season in the top-flight, Youri Tielemans could be a bargain buy this summer. His value will likely to shoot up after just another season in the Premier League.
A fee has not yet been mooted for the midfielder. However, he is unlikely to be ridiculously expensive by today’s standards. Whoever signs the youngster will pull off something of a coup.
Youri Tielemans is only going to get better in the coming years with more exposure at the top-flight of football. He seems like a no-brainer for any Premier League club looking to improve their central midfield options this summer.
