Premier League outfit Hull City are looking to bring in firepower in the January transfer window according to Tigers boss Steve Bruce.
Hull has struggled to score goals in the Premier League this season and could now add some new strikers to their squad in the winter transfer window.
Interest
Bruce confirmed his interest in adding to his attacking options in his press conference prior to today’s crucial bottom of the table clash at West Brom.
Bruce said: “It’s been made clear that Sanogo might be available on loan and it’s something we’ll have a look at,”
“I don’t think I’m alone in being interested in Jermain Defoe either, who seems to be available, but the figures and the finances might just be beyond us.
“We’ll have a go. We have got four or five things on-going but whether it’s financially possible for us to do something in this window is debatable.
“If a player becomes available that will help us get better going forward then we’ll always try and act but we’ll have to wait and see. As usual, it will probably happen in the last couple of days of the window. Everyone’s jockeying for position.”
Loan
Arsenal striker Yaya Sanogo has emerged as a realistic target for the Tigers. The French youngster has scored just once in his senior career with the Gunners and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will be loaned out in January, preferably to a Premier League club.
Sanogo does look like a promising striker but has struggled to establish himself for Arsenal due to the presence of Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez. The youngster has looked low on confidence at times and regular first team football may be able to help that issue.
A deal until the end of the season could be ideal for all parties, as Hull will get a striker desperate to impress in the Premier League and the player will pick up invaluable first team football in the Premier League, which would hopefully help him become a better player and therefore a bigger asset to the Gunners.
Expensive
Jermain Defoe was another player mentioned by Bruce in that press conference, but as the Hull boss said the 32-year-old may prove an expensive option for the Tigers. He is still contracted to MLS franchise Toronto FC, but is currently training with former-club Tottenham in order to stay fit.
It is believed that Defoe is looking for a move back to England and the Premier League. However, a potential transfer fee and his significant wages maybe too much for the Tigers to afford in January.
However, Defoe is a proven Premier League goal scorer, having scored 152 goals in 427 appearances for the likes of West Ham, Portsmouth and two spells at Tottenham. His signing may be an expensive one, but he does bring pace and poaching ability to any team.
Hull is not the only suggested destination for the striker this month, with Crystal Palace, Leicester, QPR and even former-club Tottenham linked with a move for the striker. If Tottenham did enter the race for the striker I think it is fair to say they would be willing to offer the striker far bigger wages than the Tigers.
Goals
The Tigers have scored just 20 goals in 20 Premier League games this season. They may not be the lowest scorers in the top-flight, but still the likes of Abel Hernandez and Nikica Jelavic have not been finding the net on a consistent enough basis.
Jelavic has scored just six goals in the Premier League this season, while Hernandez has scored just three goals in his first season in the Premier League.
Relegation
The Tigers are just two points above the relegation zone and face a crucial away game at West Brom later today, a game they are odds of 3/1 to win. Defeat could mean dropping into the drop zone and a difficult rest of the campaign.
A new striker could just help the Tigers’ battle against the drop this season and make a major difference to the Hull team as a whole. It remains to be seen which striker will arrival at the KC Stadium in January, but a new striker could definitely not harm the Tigers cause.
