England boss Fabio Capello claims that John Terry has served his punishment and is ready to return as captain for his country.
Terry was stripped of the England captaincy last year following revelations about his private life, but regained the armband ahead of this weekend’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales.Speaking of his decision to reinstate Terry as captain, Capello said: “Something happened in my mind when I saw the armband during the game we played in Copenhagen. In the second half, it changed between three players. It was upsetting for John Terry to see this.””After this I thought it was time for John Terry, after one year of punishment, to return to be our captain.”Capello also declared that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will start Saturday’s match in Cardiff and heaped praise on the 19-year-old.He said: “Now he (Wilshere) is playing like a player who has played a lot of games, like a player who is 28 or 29 years-old.””I saw the games that he played against Barcelona, he played fantastic games with personality and also without fear. It is not easy to find a player like him who plays without fear.”Delighted to have been returned the captaincy after 13 months, Terry was keen to shift focus to a crucial encounter against Wales. He said: “It’s been nice for me to see the players publicly supporting me and privately as well. I have been touched by that but I don’t want it to overshadow the importance of the game. We really must win to put ourselves back on top of this group.”England go into the match in second place in Group G, though three points on Saturday would see them leapfrog leaders Montenegro.Terry added: “We realise that they (Wales) are bottom of the group and haven’t had the best of results, but I see them as a dangerous side with some really good young players coming through that will be there for a long time.””Although on paper everyone is expecting us to win, as a group of players we aren’t thinking like that. We realise it’s going to be a tough game and we must be up for it.”
