RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner continued his excellent goalscoring campaign on Wednesday night, as he scored the only goal of the game at Tottenham in the Champions League last-16 first leg. The took Werner on to 26 goals for the season in all competitions. His scoring exploits are only adding to a reputation that the forward has built as one of the best young forwards in the European game.
Werner could leave this summer
Even though Werner only signed a new deal with Leipzig earlier in the season, speculation is rife in media all over Europe that the 23-year-old will leave Die Roten Bullen this summer. Some believe that Werner agreed to sign the new deal in aide of paying back Leipzig for how they have helped him as a player.
If he had not signed a new deal then he would have been a free agent this summer and had the pick of clubs throughout Europe. There has been speculation that Werner has an agreement with Leipzig that if he signed a new deal that he would then be allowed to leave this summer, with the club picking up a deserved fee of course. That theory makes a lot of sense.
Liverpool favourites to sign Werner
If media reports have any truth them, Werner’s most likely destination this summer is Premier League leaders Liverpool. The 23-year-old has recently talked about how proud he is to be linked with the Reds. He also called them the best team in the world.
A move to Liverpool would seem like a good one on the face of it. The Merseysider’s are a team at the top of their game, challenging for the major trophies with a top boss in Jurgen Klopp. However, Werner would face a real fight for first-team football at Anfield.
Another Premier League club reportedly interested in signing Werner are Chelsea. The Blues are set to have a summer clear-out of forward players, with the likes of Olivier Giroud, Pedro, Willian and Michy Batshuayi all set to leave the club from Stamford Bridge.
The club’s hierarchy are set to hand head coach Frank Lampard a significant transfer kitty in the summer. Werner would be an outstanding signing for the Blues.
The other club linked constantly with Werner is German giants Bayern Munich. The Bavarians were hoping to sign Werner as a free agent in the summer before he signed a new deal. Whether the Bavarians will be willing to pay a hefty asking price for the forward is unclear.
Could still win the Bundesliga with Leipzig
The strange thing is that while there is so much speculation about Werner leaving Leipzig, he could still help his team to win the Bundesliga title this season. RB Leipzig are currently odds of 9/2 to finish the season as German champions.
They are outsiders to reigning champions and league leaders Bayern Munich. However, Julian Nagelsmann’s team are just a point behind the Bavarian behemoths in the title race.
Whether a surprise title win would mean Werner stays in Leipzig or not is unknown. However, finishing the season with a title-winners medal may just make the forward think twice about moving elsewhere, even if he will be one of the hottest properties in the European game this summer.
