Newcastle United midfielder Cheik Tiote will serve a three-match suspension after his wrongful dismissal claim was rejected on Tuesday.
Tiote was shown a red card for a two-footed challenge on Jon Ashton during the Magpies’ FA Cup third-round tie at Stevenage on Saturday.
Newcastle went on to lose 3-1 to the League Two side.
The Magpies are believed to have challenged Tiote’s sending-off on the grounds that he made contact with the ball, but were warned they risked a four-match ban for a ‘frivolous’ appeal given Tiote raised both feet off the ground in the tackle.
The Ivory Coast international will miss the English Premier League Wear-Tyne derby at Sunderland on Sunday, plus fixtures against Tottenham and Fulham.
