Christian Pulisic saw a penalty saved as AC Milan were beaten 2-1 by Torino.

The Rossoneri missed the chance to close the gap on the top four, as Gvidas Gineitis’ 76th-minute strike sealed all three points for the hosts.

Torino took the lead in bizarre fashion after just five minutes, with Mike Maignan’s attempted clearance ricocheting off Malick Thiaw and into his own net.

Milan were awarded a golden opportunity to equalise in the 32nd minute when Marcus Pedersen was penalised for handball, but Vanja Milinkovic-Savic guessed correctly to keep out Pulisic’s spot-kick.

Milinkovic-Savic made a string of fine saves to keep the Rossoneri at bay until the 74th minute, when his resistance was finally broken by Tijjani Reijnders’ fierce strike into the top corner.

However, just two minutes later, Gieitis scored what proved to be the winner, latching onto a free-kick and drilling a low shot beyond Maignan.

Data Debrief: Penalty killer Milinkovic-Savic strikes again

In keeping out Pulisic, Milinkovic-Savic has now saved four penalties in Serie A this season; the most by any goalkeeper across the big five European leagues.

Meanwhile, among goalkeepers with at least four penalties faced in a Serie A season since 2005-06, he has the best save percentage (80%, four out of five).

Thiaw opened the scoring, not that he knew much about it. The defender is only the second Milan player to score two own-goals against a single team in a Serie A campaign after Franco Baresi against Pescara in 1992-93.

Torino have now won each of their last three home league meetings with the Rossoneri, doing so for the first time since an identical streak between 1976 and 1977.
