Barcelona have held talks with Chelsea over a £20million deal for Fernando Torres, the Metro understands.
The Spain international has emerged as a shock target for the La Liga champions, who recently added highly rated Brazilian international Neymar to their front line for £52million.
The Catalan club are expected to part company with David Villa and Alexis Sanchez, which would allow manger Tito Vilanova to make a move for the former Liverpool striker.
The 29 year old has been much maligned during his time at Stamford Bridge, having scored just fifteen goals in eighty-two league appearances.
He did however manager 22 goals in all competitions last season, including the opener in last month’s Europa League final victory over Benfica.
Napoli, who recently appointed Rafael Benitez as manager have also been linked with Torres, potentially as a makeweight in a deal that would see Edinson Cavani move in the opposite direction.
