Sometimes the football gods have a way of making life very interesting and they have done just that this week.
Spanish striker Fernando Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool on deadline day for a British record fee of £50million.
And who should the Champions be facing this weekend but the Reds. I couldn’t have scripted it better!
Sore
There are a lot of Liverpool fans who still feel very sore about the departure of the Spaniard.
I have heard a lot of fans have burnt their shirts with Torres’ name on the back or just simply thrown them in the bin. Like any fallen hero he was once loved and is now hated.
Fate
It was fate that the Spaniard should make his Chelsea debut against his old club. I’m sure the away fans will let their former hero know just how they feel about him, as if he doesn’t already know. I reckon they may feel a lot worse after the game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
If Fernando Torres does score a goal against his old side I believe he should show them the respect they deserve by not making a meal of his celebration.
However if he feels that Liverpool fans have been out of order with the criticism of him then he might go the other way and provoke them with his celebration. I believe that Torres knows what he meant to Liverpool fans and I’m sure he will do the right thing if he does score against the Reds.
Form
According to reports Torres has been unsettled for awhile due to the interest Chelsea have shown in him in the last few years. His form is believed to have suffered because of that interest and he went from deadly striker to little boy lost in a couple of months.
He hasn’t looked interested in playing for Liverpool for a long time but in recent weeks it looks like he is starting to regain his sharpness and swagger. The arrival of Kenny Dalglish as interim boss seemed to inspire his form but the Scot’s return was not enough to convince him to stay at Anfield.
Mouthwatering
The prospect of a strike partnership of Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba is truly mouthwatering. Any defence in European football would be frightened by the thought of having to keep the pair quiet. The partnership could be just enough to inspire a comeback in the race for the Premier League title race.
Feeling
Fernando Torres always professed his love for Liverpool and I’m sure at some point he did actually love the Reds and their fans. He was however unhappy at the direction the club were going in and the fact the Reds were not challenging for the major trophies.
Neutral
Sunday’s clash is why we are all fans of the beautiful game. The passion, the drama and the sheer excitement is what football is about. The neutrals among us can sit back and enjoy what promises to be a clash of the Titans. Unfortunately for Liverpool I can see Fernando Torres and Chelsea having the last laugh on Sunday evening.
Will Torres come back to haunt Liverpool on Sunday?
