Torres or Drogba? – you decide

Top man?

Top man?

This afternoon Liverpool’s Spanish striker Fernando Torres has another big stage on which to show his undoubted talent. His side travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea who have a super talented striker of their own in Didier Drogba.

Fear

The two players are very different in many ways yet strike the same sort of fear into defenders around the world. Can you imagine the two of them playing together? That really would be a centre-half’s nightmare.

It is really difficult to compare two players but I wonder which one of the two you would rather have in your team? Which one is the better player?

Peak

Didier Drogba is thirty-one years old whereas Fernando Torres is still only twenty-five. If strikers peak in their late twenties, as many experts believe, then we may have seen the best of Drogba but the best of Torres is yet to come.

Drogba is in his sixth season for Chelsea and he in all competitions he has amassed one hundred goals in two hundred and twenty-four appearances. Almost a goal every other game is a fine record and that average is more than matched in European competition where he has bagged twenty-three goals in forty-nine games for the club. For the Ivory Coast, Drogba has a remarkable forty goals from fifty-nine games.

Longevity

Torres is in his third season for Liverpool and has therefore not yet had the longevity of Drogba. In all competitions he has scored fifty-eight goals in just ninety-two games. That is a record of one goal every 1.6 games and that stands comparison against the very best. In European competition he hasn’t been as prolific and has scored just eight times in twenty-one games. His international record does not stand up against Drogba’s with twenty-three goals in seventy games, but it has to be appreciated that the opposition has often been more demanding.

In terms of winning medals and awards, Torres has any number of youth awards together with several senior honours. He has twice been named in the PFA team of the year (both teams that has been possible), he was named in the Euro 2008 team of the tournament and in the 2007/08 FIFPro world team of the year.

Great

Didier Drogba has only once been named in the PFA team of the year but that same season he was also named in the UEFA team of the year and the FIFPro world team of the year.

So it can be seen that both strikers have a great record but it is also true that both players have something of a reputation for hitting the floor a little too easily and for spending rather too much time arguing with officials and opponents. I think fans of Chelsea and Liverpool are prepared to accept the less acceptable side of their star forwards because of the excitement, joy and trophies they help to bring into their lives.

Majority

If a Premier League star team was going to be picked now and two forwards were included then I suggest that a majority of football fans would go with these two. Rooney, Van Persie, Defoe and one or two others would stake a claim, but Drogba and Torres would be the first choice for a majority of people.

It remains to be seen if either or both of them can live up to their reputation this afternoon but whatever happens, we will still be lucky in England to have them both playing in our top league.

Impossible

At the risk of asking the impossible question I would love to know which one of the two players you think is the best. I’ll start you off by saying that I will go for Torres. Didier Drogba has pace, power, strength, heading ability, shooting ability and everything else it is possible for a forward to have. At times he can be completely unplayable. Despite that, for me, there are just too many downsides to Drogba and he can be a little inconsistent. Torres is Mr consistency and rarely lets his side down.

It’s close but I give it to Torres. What do you think?

Im a Man Utd fan, but the answer is logic. Dorgba is better than Torres simply because he offers more than just goals his strength and his ability to hold up the ball allows others to chip in, where as Torres hasn’t really got that to his game.

Torres is a wonderful player, but as he is still young and not at his prime, we cant say he is better than Drogba. Torres seems to have to depend on his teammates a lot more than he should, whilst Drogba can pull brilliant plays out of thin air, both by himself and with a teammate. That is why the Bulldog is better than the Red. Take Torres’ teammates away, and then what? He aint recognizable. Simple as that. . .

You are right, Jeremy. Torres has always scored loads of goals, but hardly any of the ones I have seen him get have been from individual effort or brilliance. He has had to depend on his teammates to help him score, even against weaker teams. Not saying he is bad or anything, as that shows he and his teammates have good teamwork, and he can capitalize on that, but has anyone seen him do such brilliant plays/goals like the one Gerrard got against Hull?

this is off topic, but. . .
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROONEY!!!!

i think drogba is the better player, nd at the end of both players careers, drogba will still be better, just because the way he plays makes his teammates play better, it was amazing to watch him take over in the game against liverpool, even without taking shots. That whole game, Torres got a lesson in how to play a centre forward role efficiently.
Torres needs others to give him the ball on a plate to score… drogba creates out of nothing.

Good choice, Graham. I may have my ballot for DD, but I wont say that he is clearly the superior! FT diffinitly deserves it…. problem is- now I do not say this insultingly- you have a knack of comparing young to old. Something I just happened to have noted….
As you are A Watford fan, I understand you would like one or both of em at your club….. but- no offense, of course, Graham- I dont think Watford would do much better with either one of these two… they certainly would in Championship, but when they are promoted back to the PL, they would depend on the star so much, they would probably lose if they dont play them.
How is DeMerit doing at Watford though? He is American, and also has been in Bob Bradley’s good graces. I am interested in his progress…
Sorry for my knack of going off the subject.

Drogba is a wonderful player and at times he is completely impossible to defend against. Having said that, I think Torres might just be the best striker in the world at the moment.

I wouldn’t mind having either of them at Watford! 🙂

But I would like to hear Graham’s own choice.. Graham, who do you choose?

  • Brad

Hold it, CFC Fan, dont think I was accusing you of being biased about who to choose just cuz you’re a Blue! I was just saying that I understand if any Blues choose DD over FT. It is natural for me to choose any MU players in these comparisons/awards, as I have been a MU fan since I first saw them play…
FACT: First game I saw MU play in was a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea. I was 4 years old.
When Graham has a “You decide” article here, if he has a Red Devil there, I choose the Red Devil, unless the opponent is obviously the superior. the facts show who is better.
    Getting back on topic…..
In this case, as I have said before, it really is too early to say… FT has talent, loads of it, has done a lot already, but he is young, and going against someone who has been round longer, done even more than he has, and has won a few more trophies (and two more PL titles than Liverpool has in nearly 20 years).
Didier Drogba is the clear choice………………………………….
    ……………………………. For now….

Talking about overall contribution to the team and not just goal scoring alone….Drogba is better. His chest control is far better than most attackers’ foot control….see the way Drogba comes back to help the defence at set pieces…..and he back-tracks to help the midfoeld too. Kudos to FT, he is a fine finisher and goal scorer but he’s not the man DD is….at least not yet!

Yea Brad – i’m a little surprised at my first thought too. Maybe I should think about my opinion a few times before I actually post one.

Torres just has that factor of ‘potential’ that you don’t want to neglect…DD is proven and does not have many years left in his career…in terms of stats, Torres seems to be doing what DD does at a faster pace.

BUT – Gianfranco’s article is what sets DD apart from Torres. It all comes down to the leadership and DD far surpasses Torres in this category…DD is a major threat on his own, and when he makes everyone around him better, then you have a crisis on your hands…DD carries a lot on his shoulders and he delivers. I don’t think Torres is capable of being such a leader (yet), but he does perform very well on his own.

I’m not biased just cuz i’m a Blues fan…I try to be fair based on what I know. Gianfranco’s article reminded me of DD’s leadership and b/c of this, i’m convinced that DD is the way to go. I was just quick to jump on the fact that Torres is younger and has the ‘potential’ to be better.

Thing is, Graham has a knack of comparing the young with the old…
    ex. rooney v. zola.
it is not good to do this really……………. give the youngin a chance to reach their peak, then we can compare em to the old guns that are still shooting (Drogba in particular!).

    To Baka:
how much crack are you huffing right now? You have GOT to be high on weed to even THINK of sending DD to (heck). I am a MU fan like you are.. last time i checked, you were…. but I am not as biased toward even our club’s fiercest rivals. Respect and even admire those rivals, and their players, man.

    To CFC Fan:
I was surprised you first thought FT was the clear choice… when i first read this article I thought ALL Blues fans would (understandably) choose the Blue Bulldog.

As for me….. I think, for one, it is too early (FT aint even reached his prime guys!) to say who is better. But, if you would like my honest opinion: it should be Drogba.

Gianfranco – thank you for sharing that article. It gives another perspective on just how much of an impact Drogba’s game has (and all this without Anelka by his side!). He is a leader and this article alone will convince you that Drogba’s leadership holds tremendous value compared to Torres. I think this is one thing I overlooked in previous my post.

Not to take anything away from the youngster though – he may not have saved a country (yet), but he does exemplify excellence at his position on the pitch.

DD and Nico are my top dawgs…I wouldn’t replace this duo for ANYONE!…but individually, I would say Torres is better. Torres is younger and brings more to the table as an individual. His creativity and flare is just jaw-dropping – and he plays alone at the front…Drogba impacts the game best when he plays alongside Anelka. Individually, DD has a mental edge to the game and Torres has a physical edge…but Torres is your total package in one – whereas DD needs Anelka to complement him.

I also totally agree with the comment left by ‘The Skz’. I think most would expect Torres to be doing better, but DD is just on point with his game right now.
