Liverpool confirmed on Sunday that Spain striker Fernando Torres will report for international duty this week despite suffering an ankle ligament strain in Saturday’s defeat against Stoke.
Torres required treatment during the second half of the 2-0 loss at the Britannia Stadium but still completed the 90 minutes.
Torres will now be assessed by Spain staff ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against Portugal in Lisbon.
An update on Liverpool’s website said: “The Reds’ medical team have been in contact with their Spanish counterparts to keep them up to date on the 26-year-old’s condition.”
After a slow start to the season, Torres had shown signs of rediscovering his form with four goals in four games prior to the Stoke trip.
