Tottenham agree deal for Chadli; Bertrand staying put

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with FC Twente for the transfer of Belgium international winger Nacer Chadli.

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with FC Twente for the transfer of Belgium international winger Nacer Chadli, The Mirror understands.

The deal, rumoured to be in the region of £7 million, is dependent on Chadli agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

Chadli, 23, is on the verge of becoming Spurs’ second signing of the summer, joining Brazil international midfielder Paulinho — who joined Tottenham for a club-record transfer fee of £17 million from Corinthians — at White Hart Lane.

The 23-year-old, who made his international debut against Finland on 9 February 2011, will join compatriots Moussa Dembélé and Jan Vertonghen in North London, adding to the formidable Belgian contingent in the English Premier League.

Chadli scored 12 goals in 26 league appearances for FC Twente last season and hit another six in 10 matches in the UEFA Europa League.

The Belgium international is physically strong and technically gifted, the opposite of Aaron Lennon, and possesses a keen eye for goal.

Bertrand staying put

Chelsea F.C. left-back Ryan Bertrand has played down speculation linking him with a summer move away from Stamford Bridge, affirming he has no plans to go out on loan next season, according to Sky Sports.

Recent reports have linked Bertrand with a move to Liverpool, but the 23-year-old wants to stay at Chelsea and fight for a place in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI next term.

The England international, who scored two goals in 38 appearances in all competitions for the Blues last term, signed a five-year deal in September 2012 under manager Roberto Di Matteo.

In all likelihood, the 23-year-old defender will back-up Ashley Cole at left-back in 2013/14 and will probably see a significant dip in playing time if he decides to remain at Stamford Bridge.

“I have been on loan four or five times but then there comes a time when you have to say, ‘Right, I am going to spend some time back at the club and see what happens,’ said Bertrand.

“Obviously I want to be Chelsea’s No. 1 left-back, and when that time comes it will happen.

“All I can do is be ready and keep playing, keep biding my time.

“I just concentrate on progressing in the games I get, and I’ve managed to do so in recent years. That’s the only target I have.”

In other news, Real Madrid C.F. have confirmed Spain international defender Raul Albiol has joined S.S.C. Napoli on a four-year deal.

Albiol, 27, joined Madrid from Valencia CF in the summer of 2009 and went on to make over 100 first-team appearances for Los Blancos.
