Tottenham hammered nine-men Liverpool 4-0 at White Hart Lane in the Premier League‘s early kick-off.
The visitors were on the back foot straight from the kick-off and Tottenham took the lead in the 7th minute, Croatian midfield playmaker Luka Modric curling home a superb opener from 20 yards out.
In the 28th minute it even worse for Liverpool, as midfielder Charlie Adam was dismissed for a second bookable offence when he lunged in on Scott Parker.
Tottenham continued to dominate and in the 63rd minute makeshift right-back Martin Skrtel was also dismissed for a second bookable offence, as he left his foot in on Gareth Bale.
Tottenham doubled their lead in the 66th minute. Rafael Van Der Vaart played a ball through to Jermaine Defoe who was in acres of space, the England striker held off Jose Enrique and fired past Pepe Reina in the Liverpool goal.
It was three for Spurs just two minutes later as Reina spilled a Defoe shot and Emmanuel Adebayor flicked the ball over the Reds keeper and then tapped home from a few yards out. And it was Adebayor who finished the scoring in injury-time, controlling an Assou-Ekotto cross before volleying past Reina.
Elsewhere Sunderland claimed their first victory of the season with a 4-0 hammering of Stoke at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats took the lead on 5 minutes, defender Titus Bramble scoring from close range.
The home side doubled their lead in the 10th minute as Stoke defender Jonathan Woodgate headed past his own keeper. Sunderland were three up in the 27th minute as Craig Gardner’s effort took a deflection off Ryan Shawcross before finding the net.
The scoring was completed in the 58th minute, Swedish midfielder Sebastian Larsson curling in a superb effort from a free-kick. The Black Cats fans will be breathing a sigh of relief with this first victory of the season.
Fulham came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Manchester City at Craven Cottage. Manchester City took the lead on 18 minutes as Sergio Aguero scored with a well-taken effort into the bottom corner of the net.
And just after half-time the Argentinian scored his second from a nod down from strike-partner Edin Dzeko. The home side were back in it in the 55th minute as Bobby Zamora smashed home an effort from the edge of the area.
The Cottagers equalised with just 15 minutes remaining. Bobby Zamora laid the ball off to midfielder Danny Murphy, who hit a shot that took a deflection off Vincent Kompany and found the back of the net.
Manchester United came out on top in the big game of the weekend as the Champions defeated Chelsea 3-1 at Old Trafford. United took the lead on 8 minutes. Ashley Young’s free-kick was headed home by centre-back Chris Smalling. Replays suggest that the youngster was offside when he headed home.
United were two goals up in the 37th minute as Nani took on two Chelsea players before firing in an unstoppable effort from just outside the area. United got a lucky break for their third goal as the ball rebounded off Nani and landed at the feet of Wayne Rooney to score from close range.
The half-time score of 3-0 was harsh on the visitors but United were more clinical in front of goal. Chelsea came out much stronger in the second half and got their reward just after the break. Substitute Nicolas Anelka played a ball through the United defence to Fernando Torres, who lifted the ball over David De Gea and into the United net.
United had a chance to make it four in the 55th minute as Nani was brought down in the penalty area by Jose Bosingwa. England striker Wayne Rooney stepped up to take the penalty but slipped as he was taking it, resulting in the ball going wide of the goal.
Chelsea pushed hard to get back into the game and Spanish striker Fernando Torres missed an open goal after rounding United keeper David De Gea. However Chelsea couldn’t find a second goal and United claimed a valuable victory.
