Tottenham have decided against pursuing their interest in twenty-seven year old Zenit St Petersburg forward Andrei Arshavin.
It was reported that the club had rejected a bid from Spurs, while Arshavin’s agent had said he was hopeful Arshavin would move to White Hart Lane.
It is now reported that Spurs are insisting that the club had not made a bid for Arshavin and that they are now turning their attention to other targets including, allegedly, Arshavin’s Russian team-mate Roman Pavlyuchenko.
The £15million rated Pavlyuchenko is said to have had talks with the club last week.
Amongst other clubs around Europe, Arshavin has been linked this summer with moves to Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea since Euro 2008.
On Thursday, Arshavin’s agent Dennis Lachter had said he was confident his client would be playing for Tottenham next season.
“It is my prediction that Arshavin is going to be a Tottenham player this season,” Lachter told the BBC.
“He just rejected a huge, huge offer to renew his contract for another five years. He would like to leave for the Premier League.”
In July, Arshavin’s hopes of what would have been a dream move to Barcelona collapsed after the they failed to meet Zenit’s valuation for their prize asset.
Could it be that Europe’s big clubs are just slightly worried that Arshavin is too expensive for a player who has only really come to prominence over the past couple of seasons? Maybe Zenit St Petersburg and Mr. Lachter have seen the euro signs and got just a little bit too greedy.
