According to a recent report from The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign Sam Johnstone this summer.
The news comes after it was seemingly confirmed that Manchester United have given up in their pursuit of signing him, with their priority being to look elsewhere for new reinforcements in the transfer window. Given that they already have David de Gea and Dean Henderson on the books, that makes a lot of sense.
Spurs, meanwhile, are believed to be eager to lock down a back-up keeper for captain Hugo Lloris.
The Frenchman is still easily one of the best goalkeepers in world football but given that he’s 35 and Johnstone is 29, they need to start thinking ahead to the future.
Plus, with Spurs being set for another run in Europe next season, Johnstone will likely be used in whatever competition they end up in – as well as for the FA Cup and League Cup.
