Tottenham Must Rely On Harry Kane More Than Ever Down The Stretch

Tottenham Hotspur escaped with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Friday. It was both teams’ first competitive game since early March and, at times, it showed. Both sides played with energy and intensity, but lacked sharpness and couldn’t create many chances. Despite the final result, one of the biggest news of the contest was the fact that Harry Kane played the entire contest.

The England international played the full 90 minutes and, even though he didn’t score, his sole presence out there is a huge plus for The Spurs. He represents the team’s best chance to remain alive in the race for a 2020-21 UEFA Europa League berth, as things stand now.

The London-based club sit in eighth place with 42 points and have gone winless in their last four league matches, drawing two and losing two. That’s far from ideal if we consider the fifth-placed team, Manchester United, edges them by four points. However, the return of Kane gives the Spurs something they had lacked in the past. He represents a true goalscoring threat and an attacking reference for the rest of the forward line. He is a massive upgrade for what Jose Mourinho wants to do.

The numbers back Kane up to make an impact down the stretch

Kane might have been quiet against The Red Devils, but he has 11 goals in 21 appearances for Tottenham. Injuries have taken a toll on him this year and, had he been safe all year long, he would be higher in the Premier League’s scoring table, too. Now he has eight games to prove his worth and show he can carry Tottenham when things get tough.

If the Spurs fail to play in Europe next season, don’t be surprised if Kane chooses to leave the club. But that’s another story to analyze once the season ends. Right now, the forward is ready to be the difference maker the Spurs will desperately need down the stretch. It will be because of him if the Spurs reach their goals.
