Tottenham Hotspur’s plans for a new stadium have been approved by London mayor Boris Johnson.
The news will come as a boon to the North London-based English Premier League club, who have been angling for a move from White Hart Lane for some time.
Tottenham had their plans for a 56,000 all-seater stadium approved by the Haringey Council earlier this year, before the mayor’s office confirmed they would also back the project.
“I am content to allow Haringey Council to determine the case itself, subject to any action that the secretary of ctate may take, and do not therefore wish to direct refusal or to take over the application for my own determination,” Johnson said in a statement.
The project is expected to cost approximately 450 million pounds but will increase Tottenham’s capacity at home matches by nearly 20,000 spectators.
The club had also registered an interest in taking over the 2012 Olympic Stadium in London once the event had been completed, but this news should insteadh pave the way for the relocation of fellow London club West Ham United.
West Ham’s bid was likelt to have the backing of British athletics authorities, with the club intent on keeping the athletics track at the stadium as part of their move.
