According to Sky Sports, Tottenham are in talks with Italian giants Inter Milan for the sale of Denmark international Christian Eriksen. The Sky reports suggest that the two clubs are still quite far apart when it comes to agreeing on a transfer fee. However, with Eriksen unsettled, the pair are expected to find middle ground on a fee before the January transfer window closes.

Spurs will receive a relatively small fee

On his day, Christian Eriksen is a fine playmaker and a big asset to any club. Nevertheless, Spurs should have sold the Danish international last summer.

The main reason for selling Eriksen is the obvious financial factor. his contract is up this summer, so teams will be reluctant to spend a big fee on a player will be a free agent in the near future. Spurs would have surely have got a bigger fee last summer for the midfielder.

To be honest it is a major surprise that Tottenham’s usually money-savvy chairman Daniel Levy did not force through a sale to bring in some more cash from Eriksen’s sale, knowing that he would go free in the summer. They will get a much smaller fee now he has such a short time left on his contract.

He wants to go

Last summer, the Danish midfielder stated that he wanted a new challenge after six-and-half years at the north London club. At 27, it understandable that he wants to move on and experience something else before the chance passes him by.

Making it to last seasons Champions League final will likely be the best the Danish playmaker will ever achieve with the club. That is not deriding Spurs in any way, it is just the cold hard truth, as they simply will not shell out the investment needed to win the big trophies.

The aforementioned Levy does a good job of balancing the books at the north London club. However, he is unlikely to allow the head coach, whoever that may be to spend massive amounts of money to sign top-quality players.

You cannot blame Eriksen for having ambition and a desire to move to a club that will win trophies in the near future. At the moment, even with Jose Mourinho at the helm, they look further away than ever from winning a trophy.

A move to Inter offers the chance to work with Antonio Conte, who has the Nerazzurri challenging perennial champions Juventus for the Italian title. Inter are now odds of 3/1 to win the Italian title this season.

Best all-around if Eriksen leaves this month

It seems that Eriksen is likely to leave before the month is out. At last weekends home game against Liverpool, he seemingly waved goodbye to the Spurs fans. It seemed the 1-0 defeat against the league leaders was likely to be his last appearance in a Tottenham shirt. However, he featured in Spurs 2-1 win over Middlesbrough FA Cup third round replay on Tuesday night.

A move away comes a few months too late really. Eriksen has been in and out of the team this season and he has not looked like the player he had during his best days in north London.

His performances have been poor when he has played and he has looked distracted at times. His head has definitely been elsewhere, which is why he needs to leave in the next few weeks.

The Eriksen who has been playing for Spurs is of no use to Mourinho men. It is better for everybody involved if he makes the talked about move to Inter and brings closure to an awkward situation.

Will Christian Eriksen join Inter in the January transfer window?
