Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni says he is expecting to secure a contract extension within the coming weeks.
The 72-year-old saw his side qualify for next year’s Euro 2012 championships following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Estonia, which ensured a 5-1 playoff victory on aggregate.
Having secured Ireland’s place in Poland and Ukraine, Trapattoni believes that he and his assistant manager Marco Tardelli deserve a new deal.
“We said we did not want to put pressure on the FAI (Football Association of Ireland) but in the future we will talk about this,” the former Italy boss said to reporters.
“I have said I think we deserve a new agreement, Marco Tardelli and myself. We have done what we were asked to do.”
“They chose us for this reason and I think we have given the perfect answer with qualification.”
“We are all responsible people and we were aware that had we failed with qualification, things could have gone differently.”
“We are now happy with the squad. We find new players in almost every game.”
