PSV Eindhoven started their campaign to improve on last season’s third-place finish in the Dutch League with a 3-1 win against Heerenveen on Saturday.

PSV, who last won the Eredivisie title in 2008, had to wait until the second half for the breakthrough with Ola Toivonen scoring twice either side of an equaliser from Milan Kopic.

Orlando Engelaar added a third in stoppage-time.

Defending champions FC Twente were held 0-0 by Roda JC Kerkrade on Friday as the new season got underway.

Twente, who were coached by Steve McClaren last season before the ex-England boss moved to Wolfsburg in Germany, went into the match buoyed by having captured the Dutch Super Cup last weekend.

They had the best chance to win the game just after the interval, but Costa Rica international Bryan Ruiz, reportedly a target of Liverpool, missed the target.

On Sunday, Ajax Amsterdam, the runners-up to Twente last season, face a trip to Groningen while Feyenoord face Utrecht.
