A section of FC Twente’s Grolsch Veste stadium collapsed during renovations on Thursday, trapping construction workers.
Work was underway to upgrade the stadium in Enschede, the Netherlands, when the roof of one stand collapsed after two support beams buckled.
Local media reports indicate rescue workers have been on the scene attempting to free those trapped in the rubble, with five people reportedly injured.
“We do not have many details at the moment, the only thing we can say is that we have quite a big situation,” a Twente regional police spokesman said.
“Part of the tribune has collapsed, so we have some people beneath it and we have got some people (police officers) there at the moment.”
“We can’t say any more about what is going on because we have had no contact from our people from our station who are there at the moment.”
Emergency services would not comment if anyone had been killed and did not discuss the extent of any injuries suffered.
Twente won the Eredivisie title in 2010 and finished second last season, beating champions Ajax to win the Dutch Cup.
