Manchester City and Real Madrid took each other on in the Champions League round of 16, with the Premier League club winning both legs by 2-1. The first was played before the pandemic-caused break in Madrid, and the second on Friday evening at the Etihad.
City were the better team for most of the game and deserved to go through, but both of their goals came after terrible mistakes by Real defender Raphael Varane.
Gabriel Jesus first dispossessed the French centre-back in Real’s box and put it on the plate for Raheem Sterling to score one of the easiest goals of his career, and then took full advantage of his poorly headed backpass to chip it past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Karim Benzema scored a fine header for his team in between these moments, but it proved to have been in vain.
