With the UEFA Cup group phase completed, 32 remaining teams are about to know who they are to face in the next round as the draw is to be performed in Nyon, Switerland on Friday.
The 32 teams are divided into four different pots: One for group winners, one for runers-up, one for third-placed teams and the remaining pot is for those that finished third in their respective Champions League group.
In the round of 32, no clubs from the same country can meet. Moreover, a group winner must be drawn against a third-placed team while a runner-up will be drawn against a team that joined the tournament after being eliminated from the Champions League.
An overview of the four pots
Group winners: Manchester City, Metalist Kharkiv, Standard de Liege, Udinese, Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV, Saint-Etienne and CSKA Moscow
to play against (third placed): Paris Saint-Germain, Olympiakos, Sampdoria, NEC, Braga, Aston Villa, Copenhgen or Lech Poznan.
Runners-up: Twente, Galatasaray, Stuttgart, Tottenham, Milan, Ajax, Valencia and Deportivo
to play against (from Champions League): Bordeaux, Werder Bremen, Shakhtar Donetsk, Marseille, Aalborg, Fiorentina, Dynamo Kiev or Zenit St. Petersburg.
