In a contest between two sides battling it out at opposite ends of the Primeira Liga table, Benfica will travel to the Estádio Municipal de Portimão on Wednesday night.

Starting with the hosts, although Portimonense might have managed to snatch a 1-0 win off of Gil Vicente on their return to action last week, it does not cover what has been a worrying campaign for Paulo Sérgio’s men. Still sat three points adrift of safety and with just a sole Primeira Liga win to their name since the end of November, the White and Blacks also have a growing reputation across Portugal for their continued issues in front of goal. Comfortably holding the worst attacking return with just 17 top-flight goals this year, Wednesday’s hosts have particularly shown their less than clinical edge on home soil. Sérgio’s side have managed to bag just a pair of goals at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão in almost 500 minutes of action either side of the break.

As for the visitors, while Benfica might still find themselves leading Porto at the top of the Primeira Liga, the former European giants are enduring what has been an extended blip. Putting in another sluggish display and held to a shock 0-0 stalemate against bottom-half strugglers Tondela on their return to action, the Reds have now drawn their last three Primeira Liga appearances on the spin. Desperate to make a much-needed return to form this week, Head Coach Bruno Lage will be calling on his side to find a spark in the final third. Drawing a blank last week, Benfica have failed to score more than a single goal in their last five top-flight matchups, their worst run of the season so far. In a contest that should be a cagey encounter in midweek, we’re backing under 2.5 goals on Wednesday night.
