Competition: Premier League
Market: Under 2.5 goals
Odds: 10/11 @ 888sport
In a matchup that could prove to be a cagey affair in midweek, Southampton will welcome Crystal Palace to an empty St. Mary’s on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Southampton might have put in a spirited display away at Liverpool over the weekend, The Saints couldn’t end what has been a nightmare run of form. Although the South Coast outfit might have all but managed to extend on their Premier League status for another season, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men have freefallen their way down the standings. With some in their camp maybe still looking over their shoulder at the drop zone, the one-time RB Leipzig boss has seen his squad fail to win any of their last five matchups across all formats, suffering four defeats. Watching Leicester end their FA Cup adventure last month and also blown away thanks to that dreadful 3-0 drumming against West Brom, it should also be noted that Southampton have bagged just a pair of goals on their extended blip.
As for the visitors, managing to end their own worrying run of form away at an already relegated Sheffield United over the weekend, Crystal Palace will be desperate to build off of that result. Almost finding themselves stuck in Premier League limbo after confirming their top-flight status for another year, Roy Hodgson’s men are simply hoping to end their campaign on a high. Drawing a line under their three-match losing run on Saturday afternoon, the former England boss also saw his side record more than a single strike in a game in any of their last nine contests. Although The Eagles might have landed a 1-0 win when they welcomed Southampton to Selhurst Park earlier in the season, it should be noted that the two sides have a habit of producing low-scoring encounters. With each of the last six meetings between Tuesday’s opponents ending with under 2.5 goals, we’re backing a similar outcome in midweek.
