In a battle between two sides in the midst of a torrid run of form, Lazio will welcome Cagliari to an empty Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night.
Starting with the hosts, hit with a 2-1 defeat away at the Allianz over the weekend, Lazio have continued on an abysmal end to the 2019/2020 campaign. Freefalling down the standings after watching both Inter Milan and Atalanta leapfrog them, I Biancocelesti have managed to collect just a single point over their last five Serie A appearances. Along with now being hit with back-to-back defeats at the Stadio Olimpico for the first time this season, Head Coach Simone Inzaghi will have a growing headache over his side’s recent issues in front of goal. While leading marksman Ciro Immobile might have ended his mini drought from the spot over the weekend, Lazio have failed to record more than a single strike in any of their last five contests on the bounce, a run that was highlighted by a dreadful 2-1 defeat against relegation scrappers Lecce earlier in the month.
As for the visitors, while Cagliari might have managed to salvage a point against Sassuolo on home soil last weekend, Walter Zenga’s men have endured a woeful second half of the campaign. Losing their status in the top half of the standings and now in the midst of a six-match winless run, the Islanders have a reputation for their problems in front of goal. Despite bagging the equalizer at the Sardegna Arena last time out, that is the only strike that Cagliari have recorded in over 450 minutes of action. Also drawing back-to-back blanks on the road, Thursday’s hosts also hold what is a worrying record against the fading European outfit. Cagliari have lost their last three straight contests against Lazio and have not recorded a win over Inzaghi’s men since 2013.
