Manchester United have broken to the front of the queue to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City, Sky Sports have reported, quoting their own sources.
United have apparently increased their offer to £70 million, which helped them move ahead of Manchester City.
Leicester have no particular wish to part ways with their top defender, but they will have welcomed the battle between the Manchester clubs that has arisen. It’s believed, however, that they won’t be considering any offer lower than the price Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January last year – £75 million, the still holding world record fee for a defender.
As for Maguire himself, the England international is of a similar point of view as his current club. He is perfectly happy at the King Power Stadium, but would be willing to consider a move to any of the top-six sides in the Premier League. United’s apparent willingness to pay the most points to the fact that their need for a defensive leader is dire, but it seems that both suitor clubs will have to increase their respective offers further if they are to stand a chance of signing the 26-year-old centre-back.
