(GSM) – Manchester United back to the top of the table with a narrow 1-0 defeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
After Rooney’s troublesome knee kept him out, with the game with AC Milan on Wednesday a doubt too, United were hardly impressive in defeating Mick McCarthy’s strugglers. Paul Scholes’ 100th Premier League goal midway through the second half saw United claim all three points at Molineux.
Scholes settled a tense encounter 17 minutes from time, when he kept a cool head to beat Marcus Hahnemann after Jody Craddock’s clearance had fallen nicely for the veteran midfielder.
In other side, Arsenal kept their title charge well on course with a 3-1 victory over struggling Burnley at the Emirates on Saturday.
Cesc Fabregas, who went off injured just before half-time after tweaking his hamstring, had earlier put the Gunners ahead on 34 minutes with a fine finish after a great one-two with Samir Nasri.
David Nugent drew the visitors level five minutes after the restart, but a curling finish from Theo Walcott restored Arsenal’s advantage on the hour. Andrey Arshavin sealed the win in injury time after smashing a left-foot shot into the bottom corner.
Chelsea are taking a break from the league campaign this weekend and are instead in FA Cup quarter-final action against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
