United rename stand after Ferguson

Manchester United have renamed their North stand after manager Sir Alex Ferguson in honour of his 25th year at the Old Trafford helm.

The Scottish manager moved to the Red Devils from Aberdeen in 1986, and despite losing 2-0 to Oxford United in his first game in charge, he has gone on to become one of the most successful managers in the game.

Ferguson has led United to a total of 27 major honours, including 12 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League trophies.

Speaking on the Old Trafford pitch before Saturday’s game against Sunderland, club chief executive David Gill said: “Alex – 25 years what a magnificent achievement. On behalf of Manchester United fans and the football world generally, many congratulations.”

“The club wanted to celebrate this occasion in an historic way so today I’m delighted to say the North stand – the biggest in our stadium – is to be renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson stand.

“To be at a club of our standing for so long is truly remarkable. In that time, Sir Alex has established himself as the most successful manager in British football history, winning countless trophies and creating numerous sides admired around the world for their flair and ability.”

“Alex’s contribution to United has been immense and the magnificent stadium we have here at Old Trafford is a testament to his ability and success.”

Plans have also been announced for a statue of the 69-year-old to be erected by the entrance to the newly-named stand, and is planned to be in place by August 2012.

“The Board felt it right to take this unique step, as well as to commission Philip Jackson to create a statue to go alongside his other great pieces here of Sir Matt and the United Trinity.”

“These tributes are made with the grateful thanks of the owners, board, staff, players and fans of Manchester United, for the great pleasure Alex has brought us all over a quarter of a century.”
