Dayot Upamecano of RB Leipzig is currently at the top of Liverpool’s list of transfer wishes, according to the Mirror.
The Premier League champions are currently going through a major defensive injury crisis, with Virgil van Dijk, manager Jurgen Klopp’s likely preferred centre-back pair, out for the biggest part of the season with different knee injuries. Joel Matip has also struggled for fitness this term and has only just come back to the fold. The club were widely criticized for not signing a centre-back this summer in the wake of Dejan Lovren leaving for Zenit St Petersburg, but Klopp maintained the stance that Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip would be complemented by the ability of defensive midfielder Fabinho to step into the role if required. However, the Brazilian has been injured as well, though he should be back in action after the current international break together with Thiago Alcantara.
Liverpool are likely to turn to the market for a solution in January, and apparently, the 22-year-old Leipzig man is their preferred choice. They are also said to be keeping an eye on Ozan Kabak of Schalke 04 (20) and Torino’s Gelison Bremer (23).
