Uruguay star looks for gold

Gaston Ramirez is optimistic Uruguay can win gold at the Olympic Games.

Oscar Tabarez’s men marked their final warm-up game for the competition with a 2-0 victory over Panama in the Estadio Centenario.

Edinson Cavani fired his side in the lead, before the Bologna star stole the plaudits with a beautifully-taken finish after 18 minutes.

Speaking to reporters after the match, the attacking midfielder made clear that he wanted glory for his team in the United Kingdom.

“(The game) was important because there was a lot of improvement compared to how we played against Chile on Wednesday,” the 21-year-old said.

“You are much more relaxed because the key is to improve, and I think we showed that. What I want to see in London is Uruguay as champions. Nothing more than that.”

Questioned on a possible final clash with Brazil, Ramirez refused to look beyond Group A rivals Great Britain, Senegal and United Arab Emirates.

“Before that we have three opponents. We cannot think about what comes next, first we have to approach the first match very seriously in order to play the second with less pressure.”

Uruguay will be looking for a third Olympic triumph in London, having secured their last victories in 1924 and 1928.
