Giuseppe Rossi has been abused online by fanatical United States fans for turning his back on the country of his birth to play for Italy.
The Villarreal forward was born and raised in New Jersey but decided to play for the European nation of his parents’ descent.
After Jurgen Klinsmann’s men beat the Azzurri 1-0 on Wednesday, Rossi, 25, was criticised on Twitter.
“If I saw you in person I would knock your teeth out. You are a disgrace to Americans everywhere,” a supporter called Jimmer Stevenson commented on the social networking site.
The ex-Manchester United man is seemingly a hate figure with US fans, and rumours are rife that a ‘Giuseppe Rossi is a traitor’ page has also been set up on Facebook.
Meanwhile, the striker’s club future could also be in doubt, as agent Federico Pastorello has questioned whether he will be at El Madrigal next season.
“It’ unlikely he’ll stay at Villarreal,” the representative told Las Provincias.
“The team’s season doesn’t leave many prospects for the future and it is difficult for a champion like him to remain with a club that has no ambitions.”
Rossi is currently trying to return from torn knee ligaments in time to be available for selection for Italy’s Euro 2012 campaign.
