The World Cup last-16 match between the United States and Ghana went to extra time at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium here on Saturday after the game finished 1-1 at the end of normal time.

Ghana’s attacking midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng had given his side an early lead in the fifth minute by racing away from the American defence and beating Tim Howard at his near post with a low left-footed drive.

Landon Donovan drew the US level from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after teenage defender Jonathan Mensah tripped Clint Dempsey.

The winners will face Uruguay, 2-1 victors over South Korea earlier on Saturday, in the quarter-finals at Soccer City in Johannesburg on July 2.
