Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena has confessed that he could have joined Atletico Madrid in the past.
The highly rated midfielder has been on the radar of top European clubs for several years now, but the French giants somehow managed to keep hold of him.
And the 29-year-old has now revealed he had offers from Schalke, Zenit and Atletico Madrid, and he clearly regrets not having signed for los Colchoneros.
“There was Schalke, Zenit, great clubs,” the France international told beIn Sport.
“But I really like Atletico Madrid because it is a Spanish club and I have Spanish origins, but also because they play well. This was an interesting lead but it didn’t go all the way.”
Even if his contract does not expire until June 2017, Valbuena is widely tipped to leave his current employers for greener pastures in the summer.
The attacking midfielder has been at Stade Velodrome since 2006 and has made a total of 231 Ligue 1 appearances for OM, scoring 26 goals in the process.
Valbuena’s Marseille face Paris Saint-Germain away next time out and they are no less than 10/1 to emerge victorious.
